The Poppy Louise Quilt Pattern and Coloring Pages Featuring the Modern Vintage: Treasured Fabric Blog Hop

Updated: 15 hours ago

Introducing: Poppy Louise

When Rachel (the fabric designer) and I met in October 2024 at Quilt Market in Houston, we instantly connected over motherhood, fabric, and of course quilting. I fell in love with her design philosophy and her debut fabric line Bee Haven, and was so excited when she shared a sneak peek of Modern Vintage: Treasured. (See Bee Haven in my Bouncing By quilt pattern)

Rachel’s thoughtful approach—drawing on her upbringing in her mom’s quilt shop—really shines in this line. It features delicate florals, soft textures, and solid-like blenders (printed on unbleached cotton for a more sustainable process, yay!). The textured prints were inspired by vintage vases—and the result is romantic, timeless, and totally fresh.

We've got a fantastic video tutorial to show you how to make those beautiful smooth curves that give the Poppy Louise Quilt her charm - Check it out on YouTube!

The Design Process

For Poppy Louise, I wanted to create something brand new—something that really let Rachel’s beautiful floral and vase prints shine. I sketched freely, without worrying about construction, and the design came together quickly. I knew the block centers had to remain whole to showcase the fabric and I needed a way to create sharp points and smooth curves.

Construction: A Fresh Spin on Reverse Appliqué - Ghost Stitch Appliqué

If you've made my Mini Moons or Pamela Mae quilt patterns, you know how wonderfully those smooth circles come together using reverse appliqué. But this time, I’ve added a twist, what I call Ghost Stitch Appliqué (see it done HERE). It’s a clean, modern technique that allows you to get smooth, convex curves—no specialty rulers, no raw edges, and no visible stitching. Just freezer paper, Elmer’s glue, and a little magic.

The instructions are well laid out in the pattern but I know sometimes it's just easier to see it done so I've shared a detailed YouTube tutorial!

I was honored to be featured on the Benartex Virtual fabric show where I talk about Rachel's gorgeous fabric and do a brief demonstration of the technique. Check it out: Benartex Virtual Fabric Show - start watching at 37:06!

Why "Poppy Louise"

This quilt is part of a curve filled series I’m working on—each design named after a woman who’s influenced me creatively. You might’ve seen Pamela Mae, named after my mom, who taught me to sew. Well, Poppy Louise is named in honor of my Grandma Louise. She had a warmth and strength that stuck with me, and when I saw this fabric line—bold red-oranges, sweet florals, full of personality—I just knew this quilt needed her name. I think she would’ve loved it.

Pattern Features

Originally, I designed the quilt like this...

with the same block repeated and just four colors. I love how a limited color pallet and solid appearing fabrics create a modern design. You may have also noticed that the border is simple - intentionally, it keeps it modern and lets the blocks shine. Rachel's fabric is soft and flowery so I added the curves used to make the blocks into the borders giving it that "Modern Vintage" vibe and so there are two versions included!

What's in the Pattern?

  • Two border options

  • Two colorways

  • FOUR sizes: Table 25" x 53", Wall 39" x 39", Throw 53" x 67, and Twin 67" x 81"

  • PDF file to print freezer paper templates

You’ll love how versatile this design is and how it balances modern shapes with vintage charm. Download the FREE coloring pages to start playing with your own fabric choices!

Stunning Test Quilts

A huge shout out to my team of testers who jumped right in. Their creativity and love of quilting really showed as they brought Poppy Louise to life in totally unique ways! I'm so grateful for their feedback!

Amanda @stitchymomma is the one in our bunch that can't wait to get started. She's the first to dive in and gets her projects completed like she's done it a million times before, even when it's something totally new. She made a test block first then created her top with these gorgeous bird and floral prints - Chalk Garden by Cherry Guidry for Benartex.

ree

Mary Kay @mkvquilts used City Scapes by Amanda Murphy for Benartex and I love how she fussy cut to get the city in her blocks and wrapped around her quilt in the borders! The dark pink against the softer fabrics really pops! Wow!

ree

Cath @cathlmaker used this sweet as can be Adorable Alphabet by Jessica Flick for Benartex and she shared a photo of the freezer paper and Elmer's glue step!

Mollie @made_by_molliejoy was inspired by tile! She combined Bluesette Tiles by Jan Shore for Benartex with solids to really make them pop!

This last group of photos are blocks made by:

  • Bojana @bojana22 in Gathering by Shelley Cavanna for Benartex - loving the eye catching contrast!

  • Carol, my wonderful Aunt, using April's Garden by April Cornell for Benartex - so soft and sweet!

  • Sandy @mysticandsewn combined Apple Slices by Benartex with a woven - such lovely texture! During testing, Sandy shared how sewing brings her so much pleasure and purpose outside of her responsibilities! Isn't this why we all make? I love feeling the texture of my fabrics, holding my tools, hearing the hum of my machine, and seeing a project come together, it's so satisfying!

  • Stasi @tennesseequiltretreats tested this one with scraps- how fun!

Seeing all my testers photos reminds me why I love pattern design so much - the possibilities are endless!

If you're ready to dive in, pre-order your pattern now (it's launching on July 25th) and print these FREE coloring pages to plan your quilt! Your support means the world! Thank you!

Hi! I'm Jen, a quilt pattern designer and teacher. I founded Snapdragon Quilting in the spring of 2022 in memory of my beloved Grandma Louise, a skilled seamstress and crafter who grew beautiful snapdragons in her garden. I've been sewing for as long as I can remember and began passionately crafting quilts of my own creation in 2006. My quilt patterns bring bold and vibrant designs that blend traditional piecing methods with contemporary techniques. I love to play with color and contrast so you'll find lots of layout and color options in my patterns. Whether you're new to quilting or making your 100th quilt, you're in the right place, because here at Snapdragon Quilting, quilt patterns make sense.
